My father is the kindest person I have ever seen. He is tall and handsome. He is from a small village named "Fultali”. He is the eldest of four siblings. He is very passionate about his work. He is also very encouraging and always supports us to follow our dreams. I love his smiling face the most. My father is my hero!

অনুবাদ: আমার বাবা আমার দেখা সবচেয়ে দয়ালু ব্যক্তি। তিনি লম্বা এবং সুদর্শন। তিনি ‘ফুলতলী’ নামের একটি ছোট গ্রামের বাসিন্দা। চার ভাইবোনের মধ্যে তিনি সবার বড়। তিনি তার কাজের প্রতি খুব উৎসাহী। তিনি খুব উৎসাহী এবং সবসময় আমাদের স্বপ্ন অনুসরণ করতে আমাদের সমর্থন করেন। তার হাসিমাখা মুখটা আমি সবচেয়ে বেশি ভালোবাসি। আমার বাবা আমার নায়ক!

Ans. The underlined words are adjectives. (নিচে দাগ দেওয়া শব্দগুলো হলো বিশেষণ/adjectives)

b) What are the positions of these words in a sentence?

Ans. These words are positioned mostly before and after the noun, and sometimes they follow verbs. [এই শব্দগুলি বেশিরভাগই বিশেষ্যের/(Noun) আগে এবং পরে অবস্থান করে এবং কখনও কখনও তারা ক্রিয়াপদ/ (Verb) অনুসরণ করে।]

c) What are the functions of these words? What do they do in the sentences?

Ans. These words modify a noun. They provide more information and details about a noun. (এই শব্দগুলো একটি বিশেষ্য / (Noun) এর অর্থকে বিশেষিত/গুণ প্রকাশ করে। তারা একটি বিশেষ্য সম্পর্কে আরও তথ্য এবং বিশদ/ খুঁটিনাটি প্রদান করে।)

The Frog and the Ox

A big frog once lived in a small pond. Because he was the biggest creature in the pond, the frog decided he must also be the biggest thing in the world. As he sunned himself on his lily pad, he puffed out his chest with pride.

একদা একটি বড় ব্যাঙ একটি ছোট পুকুরে বাস করত। যেহেতু সে পুকুররের সবচেয়ে বড় প্রাণি ছিল, সে চিন্তা করল নিশ্চয়ই সে পৃথিবীর সবচেয়ে বড় জিনিস হবে। যখন সে তার শাপলা পাতায় রোদ পোহায়, তখন সে গর্বের সাথে তার বুক ফুলিয়ে তোলে।

"No one anywhere is bigger than I am," he thought. One day a huge ox came to drink at the pond. The frog was amazed, but he refused to be impressed. 

‘আমার চেয়ে বড় কোথাও কেউ নেই,' সে ভাবল। একদিন একটি বিশাল ষাড় পুকুরে পানি পান করতে এল। ব্যাঙ অবাক হয়ে গেল, কিন্তু সে মুগ্ধ হতে অস্বীকার করল।

"I suppose you think you are big," the frog called out to the ox. "But I want you to know that I can make myself just as big as you."

ব্যাঙ ষাড়কে ডেকে বললো, ‘আমি মনে করি তুমি নিজেকে বড় মনে করো।’ ‘কিন্তু আমি চাই তুমি জান, যে আমি নিজেকে তোমার মতো বড় করতে পারি।’

The ox did not reply. He just kept on drinking.

ষাড় জবাব দিল না। সে শুধু পানি পান করতে থাকে 

"If you don't believe me," shouted the frog, "just watch!" তুমি যদি আমাকে বিশ্বাস না কর,' ব্যাঙ চিৎকার করে বলল, ‘শুধু দেখ!

The frog took a deep breath and blew himself up to twice his usual size. But still, the ox paid no attention to him.

ব্যাঙটি একটা গভীর শ্বাস নিল এবং নিজেকে তার স্বাভাবিক আকারের দ্বিগুণ করে করে তুলল। কিন্তু তবুও ষাড়টি তার দিকে মনোযোগ দেয়নি।

"So, that's not big enough for you?" croaked the frog. Very well, I'll make myself bigger still.” He blew himself up even larger.

‘তাহলে, এটা আপনার জন্য যথেষ্ট বড় নয়?' ব্যাঙ ডেকে উঠল। ঠিক আছে, আমি নিজেকে আরও বড় করব।' সে নিজেকে আরও বড় করে উড়িয়ে দিল।

Again the ox said nothing. He simply turned away and headed for the other side of the pond. He had had enough to drink. This made the frog furious. Taking an enormous breath, he blew...and blew...and blew himself up until he burst. And that was the end of the big frog in the small pond. So, nobody should try to be what you can't be. 

আবার ষাড় কিছু বলল না। সে সরে দাঁড়াল এবং পুকুরের অপর পারে চলে গেল। তার পর্যাপ্ত পানি পান করেছিল । এতে ব্যাঙ ক্ষিপ্ত হয়ে ওঠে । একটি প্রচণ্ড নিঃশ্বাস নিয়ে, সে ফুঁক দিল...এবং উড়িয়ে দিল...এবং নিজেকে উড়িয়ে দিল যতক্ষণ না সে ফেটে যায়। আর তাতেই শেষ হয়ে গেল ছোট পুকুরের বড় ব্যাঙ । সুতরাং, যা হতে পারবে না তা হওয়ার চেষ্টা কারও উচিত নয় ।

Class 7 English 4.4 Solution:

a) Who is the biggest creature in the pond? (পুকুরের সবচেয়ে বড় প্রাণী কে?)

Ans: In this story, the frog is the biggest creature in the pond. (এই গল্পে ব্যাঙ পুকুরের সবচেযে বড় প্রাণী।)

b) What did the frog do to be as big as the ox?(ব্যাঙ ষাঁড়ের মত বড় হতে কি করল?)

Ans: The frog took a deep breath and blew himself up to be as big as the ox. (ব্যাঙ ষাঁড়ের মত বড় হতে দীর্ঘ নিঃশ্বাস নিয়েছিল এবং নিজেকে ফুলিয়ে তুলেছিল?)

Ans: From the story, I have learnt that arrogance brings downfall. (গল্প থেকে শিখেছি যে অহংকার পতন ডেকে আনে।)

Or- I learnt from the story that, nobody should try to be what you can't be. (আমি গল্প থেকে শিখেছি যে, আপনি যা হতে পারবেন না তা হওযার চেষ্টা করাও উচিত নয়।)

Adjectives have three forms/degrees. They are used to compare one thing to another. The three degrees of adjectives are – (বিশেষণের তিনটি রূপ/ধরণ/ degrees আছে। বিশেষণ একটি বস্তুর সাথে অন্য বস্তুর তুলনায় ব্যবহার করা হয়। বিশেষণের তিনটি degree হল-)

Degree কাকে বলে?

Ans: কোন কিছুকে অনুরূপ অন্য কিছুর সাথে তাদের গুনাগুন,বৈশিষ্ট,অবস্থা বা অবস্থাগত দিক থেকে তুলনা করা হলে সেই তুলনাকে Grammer এর ভাষায় Degree বলে। এটি তিন প্রকার যথাঃ-

a) Positive degree: This is the base form of an adjective. It talks about only one thing and it does not show any comparison. Example sentence: Rajshahi is a big city.

a) Positive degree: এটি একটি বিশেষণের মূল রূপ। এটি শুধু একটি বস্তুর সম্পর্কে কথা বলে এবং এটি কোনো তুলনা দেখায় না। উদাহরণ: Rajshahi is a big city. (রাজশাহী একটি বড় শহর।)

b) Comparative degree: This form of an adjective is used to compare two things. Example sentence: Chittagong is bigger than Rajshahi.

b) Comparative degree: বিশেষণের এই রূপটি দুটি জিনিসের তুলনা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। উদাহরণ: Chattogram is bigger than Rajshahi. (চট্টগ্রাম রাজশাহীর চেয়ে বড়।)

c) Superlative degree: This form of an adjective is used to compare three or more things. Example sentence: Dhaka is the biggest city in Bangladesh.

c) Superlative degree: একটি বিশেষণের এই রূপটি তিনটি বা ততোধিক জিনিসের তুলনা করতে ব্যবহৃত হয়। উদাহরণ: Dhaka is the largest city in Bangladesh. (ঢাকা বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে বড় শহর।)

It compares with only one animal. (একটি ছোট পুকুরে বসবাসকারী অন্য প্রাণীর সাথে ব্যাঙের আকারের তুলনা করে। এটি শুধুমাত্র একটি প্রাণীর সাথে তুলনা করে।)
c) The frog decided he must also be the biggest thing in the world. (ব্যাঙটি সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিল যে তাকেও বিশ্বের সবচেযে বড় জিনিস হতে হবে।)	Superlative Degree (The+adj+Common Noun)	To compare the size of the frog with every creature in the world. It compares with more than two things. (পৃথিবীর প্রতিটি প্রাণীর সাথে ব্যাঙের আকারের তুলনা করতে। এটি দুটির বেশি জিনিসের সাথে তুলনা করে।)
d) One day a huge OX drink pond. came to at the pond. (একদিন একটি বিশাল ষাড় পুকুরে পানি পান করতে এল।)	Positive degree	To tell the size of the ox. Here it does not show any comparison. (ষাড়টির আকার বলতে/ বোঝাতে। এখানে এটি কোন তুলনা দেখায় না।)
e) I can make myself just as big as you. (আমি নিজেকে তোমার মতো বড় করতে পারি।)	Positive Degree (as+adj.+as)	To tell the size of the frog. Here it does not show any comparison. (ব্যাঙের সাইজ বলতে/ বোঝাতে। এখানে এটি কোন তুলনা দেখায় না।)
f) The frog took a deep breath. (ব্যাঙটি একটা গভীর শ্বাস নিয়েছিল)	Positive degree	To tell the volume of the breath. Here it does not show any comparison.(নিঃশ্বাসের পরমাণ/ আযতন বলতে/ বোঝাতে। এখানে এটি কোন তুলনা দেখায় না।
